Sadly your story is not unique... We should really try to let go of things when the time is right - otherwise they will become a burden. Thank you for your insightful comment, Timethief.

I think the criteria you state above for keeping or ridding oneself of possessions is a good one. I'm a minimalist who is not in the least sentimental. I could virtually toss every material possession I currently have out the door and not miss any of it. My husband is not like me -- he clings to things long after their functionality has disappeared.

Here's a cautionary tale:
My mother was a sentimental person who clung to "the house" and other possessions. She clung to "the house" when my father wanted to sell at a time when property values were high and move to a smaller place closer to the medical services they needed. She clung to "the house" after my father passed on and refused to sell. If she had sold when my father wanted to she would have money in the bank today and would have had years in a nice new place that did not cost a fortune to maintain.

Following my father's death time passed and mother became both unwell and demented. The house became a dead albatross around our necks. Worse still it was full of junk we had to pay to be shed of. Property values had fallen dramatically and in the end "the house" sold for under its value. consequently, we children have to top up the house ale money that combined with the pension income pays mother's rent in the long care home where she now dwells.

I seldom, if ever, think about the distant past. Even yesterday seems like a long time ago.

Like you, I tend to hold on to anything that still has functional value, and things I am sentimentally attached to. Also refurbishing them (if economical), is something that always work for me : ) I can relate to you regarding our attachments to the home we grew up in....Its really a part of us : )

I love your sketches, they really bring your thoughts alive. I can't wait to see the finished room. I recently turned a yucky basement room into a teen penthouse hang out. Designing for teen rooms is so much fun.

Check out the before and after photos here

This is a good way to spend time with the family during a vacation. You would not have to spend much on accommodation and you can go wherever you want to go to. This is great but just for a short while. Kids would need to adjust to their surroundings every time they are in a new place. That would be difficult for older kids that have found friends.

Great suggestions, Janene. I'm afraid my kids would consider it an added thrill, to conquer the hindrances we put up. But I'll consider doing something similar with the next big project. Thanks for commenting.
