When we moved into our home in august of 2007, with a newborn baby and general chaos all over, we dumped a lot of stuff (category: nowhere to put it/ not sure if we even need it) in the basement. The result was, as could be expected, poorly used, non-functional storage rooms.
“Well, this is 3 ½ years ago! Why haven’t you done anything about it before?” you might ask with a scornful look. I guess there are no good excuses, but it takes time to get organized and our schedules have been full – OK?
(To see where we’re coming from; read about our starting point in the introduction series: Our Dynamic Family Home part 1, part 2 and part 3)
When I surf around the Internet looking at home improvement sites I often get the impression people renovate so quickly it makes my head spin. Every week there is a big reveal of another completed project, with fancy details, freshly painted and styled. I suspect they’re pulling my leg… In my experience these things take time, but that’s just me. How is it with you? Do you get renovation projects finished in practically no time, or do you, like me, find it takes time to develop the ideas and get the job done?
The den:
Our den has been used as a storage room ever since we started on the project: renewal of the storage area declaring war on procrastination last spring.
Since last week’s post a lot has happened. Just look:
Storage:
So, where did all that stuff disappear to? We finally put up the shelves in the new storage room, making plenty of space for storing our things. We need to go on another trip to IKEA to supplement with shelves for the corner section and get more plastic boxes.

So, the majority of this project is completed, but there’s still a way to go! Some of the stuff in the boxes and on the shelves need to be sorted through, the stuff divided into categories according to this post with focus on getting rid of whatever is unwanted.
I imagine there will be quite a few trips to the junkyard when the trailer is dug out from under the snow! |
As of now the garbage is stored in the garage, the storage room, and in a heap by the trailer.
What used to be storage room I was originally used for storing food, and we’ve honored that function by storing unused kitchen utensils in there. As I said in the introduction this whole area was used for dumping whatever was not in regular use, or used very rarely, so there’s definitely need of a closer look at what is actually in here:
To mention a few… Some of these are keepers and some are losers. The shelves are in need of a thorough wash, and the stuff must be sorted through according to the list of criteria for what to keep (only things that hold functional, economical, affectionate or aesthetic value gets to stay!) and then put back to it’s designated spot. I’ll let you know when we get there.

Hello, Nicone!
Yes, it was wonderful to stay in your den; love the playroom part, and your sofa made a great bed at night. The kids are lucky to have a hangout to call their own, that’s for sure!
K&P
It was our pleasure to have you! Thanks K&P <3.
BTW. The kids are thoroughly enjoying their playroom – they hang out there for hours, just about every day now.
